How to Clean the Air Conditioner Filter?
It’s rather simple to clean plastic mesh filters on your own as the user manual is typically very intuitive and they are easy to remove from the unit. Essentially, all you must do is wash the filter thoroughly with lukewarm water and mild dishwashing detergent to remove the dirt stuck on the filter. Make sure that you leave the filter to dry completely before putting it back. Damp filters in use could lead to the formation of mold and bacteria, which can cause more respiratory issues.
2. Electrostatic Air Filters
Electrostatic air filters are best used for areas where the air voltage is high. That said, the voltage often reaches 12kV between two plates. The electrostatic charge then attracts the ionized particles and they get trapped to the grounded plates. Of course, if you are using this type of HVAC unit, you can also check the voltage-generating circuit on the control board. Sometimes, this circuit will come with its own module, too.
If your main concern is tobacco smoke, electrostatic air filters may easily be the best option out there. However, they are not the top choice for other air-purifying issues such as dust and pollen.

Carbon and Adhesive Filters
Carbon air filters are made of activated carbon, which makes them ideal for effective screening of gasses and bacteria. The small absorbent pores in carbon filters react to and trap the pollutants that go through the filter. These filters are often used together with other filters as well.
Adhesive filters are also known as fiberglass filters as they are typically made of fiberglass, even though there are those made of cotton, too. They are quite common in personal use thanks to their affordability. These filters have a coat of adhesive oil/liquid, which is how they catch and trap air particles.
Finding the Right Filter Size
In order for your air conditioning system to work properly, you need to choose appropriate AC filter sizes. It is not difficult to measure the size that you need; all you have to do is use your old filter as a reference and measure its length, width, and depth. Keep in mind that most manufacturers tend to round up the numbers (for example, 19.5” becomes 20”).
