With summer temperatures well into the nineties, the last thing you need is for your air conditioner to break down and leave you with nothing but an open refrigerator door as protection against the heat and humidity (bad idea, by the way, your fridge will die). So it’s important that you watch for these 7 signs your ac needs repair.
Signs your air conditioner needs repair
Not Blowing Cold Air
If you notice the air coming out of your vents isn’t as cold as normal, your system is malfunctioning and has to work overtime to keep your home cool. This could be caused by a number of things such as duct leakage or low refrigerant. You can read more about the causes and solutions for this here.
Poor Air Flow
The lovely cooling air that comes flowing through your ducts is circulated around the system by a fan. If this develops motor or control board issues, your system won’t work efficiently and the air won’t get to where it’s needed, your living space.
Water or Moisture inside Your Home
Although air conditioners produce water when they remove moisture from the air, this should be contained inside the system and disposed of through the condensate drainage pipe. If it starts to leak into the rest of the system and your home, call a maintenance man immediately to avoid damage to your property and possessions.
Things going Bump in the Night (or Day)
Your ac is designed to run as quietly as possible. If you notice it’s making more noise than usual or strange bumps or screeching sounds, something has gone wrong or broken inside the unit and you should call your ac service company a.s.a.p.
Unpleasant Odors
If something smells funky around the house, it could be your air conditioning. Nasty smells coming out your ducts could be caused by mold, pests, or burnt-out wiring among other things. Whatever the cause, you need to get it dealt with quickly, for your health as well as your comfort.
Thermostat Malfunction
Sometimes, it’s the little things. Like the thermostat. If you keep pushing buttons or turning dials without result, you might have a thermostat malfunction. Your AC service company will diagnose and fix this in a flash.
Higher than Usual Utility Bills
If your utility bills have increased recently, your air conditioning might be developing a malfunction, making it work harder and consume more power than usual to keep you in the comfort you are accustomed to.
And remember, the most common cause of an air conditioner having to struggle to do its job is dirty air filters. If you remember to clean your air filters regularly, at least every three months and more in summer, you’ll considerably improve the performance and extend the life of your unit.
